The moment I saw Raphtalia I knew I had to make her costume. Not only do I love Isakai as a genre but I also love sword slinging babes! After watching the first few episodes of Shield Hero I was on a trip to Joanns and found the most incredible ribbed knit that I knew would be perfect for her undershirt, and thus this costume was born!

I started by drafting a pattern for the main dress, it’s a pretty standard princess seam dress so this process went rather quickly! I really loved playing around with textures on this costume! The dress is made of a brown twill and red dupioni with gold pleather trim. The armor is all different shades and weights of pleather and of course the underdress is a super soft knit. The trail features a hand painted gradient and the ears have a thermoplastic core. 

Raphtalia’s armor was made of craft foam covered in pleather! This was my first time making soft armor and while it was fun and a good skill to learn, I’m not sure if it’s a technique I would use again! I found it really challenging to manipulate the material in the ways I wanted. 

My favorite part of this costume is probably the underdress, it’s just so comfortable! My wig is a Venus in Warm Light Brown from Arda Wigs. The gloves were found on Amazon and the sword was modified from a larp base.
